MISSION

The Tuscaloosa Character Council’s mission describes how a “culture of character” is built – the purpose is to strengthen our citizens, their families, and the community by promoting excellence in character, and thereby, to become known as a “Community of Character".

Goals and Objectives:

  • To develop character in individual citzens for successful lives.
  • To strengthen marriages and families, which includes deepening relationships between parents and children.
  • To increase productivity, reduce accidents, and lower absenteeism in businesses.
  • To reduce crime and poverty.
  • To achieve excellence in education, leadership, families, housing, neighborhoods, law enforcement, services, care of the poor, health care, and race relations.

Council members mobilize volunteers in the community to assist them in achieving the above-mentioned goals.  Coordination of character development activities/programs is under the leadership of appointed chairpersons and is divided into the following domains: education, government, business, faith-based, media, and our newest domain, family.

Vision:

The Vision of establishing a Character Council is to realize a community overflowing with individuals possessing inward motivation and outward ability to actively practice good character regardless of external circumstances, resulting in a community where everyone is working together to insure that citizens are:

  1. Caring for one another
  2. Families are healthy and united
  3. Faith-based organizations are compassionate
  4. Education is effective
  5. Business is successful
  6. Government is serving the citizens
  7. Homes and streets are safe

To accomplish this vision in our community, the Tuscaloosa Character Council is established with the express mission of creating a community culture that encourages, develops, and commends good character in:

  • Individuals
  • Families
  • Faith organizations
  • Schools
  • Businesses
  • Government of our community

Accomplishment of this mission is dependant upon the council's ability to affect the community sectors of family, faith, education, business, government, law enforcement, and communications.  To effectively reach these sectors, a committee is established for each, led by a community person who is a leader in that community sector.  Each committee chairperson looks for methods and materials to accomplish the mission in their defined arena.

In the family arena the committee strives to encourage families to develop good character by providing resources and creating a community culture of character to achieve the goal of enhancing family harmony and strengthening the family as the foundation from which good character can be practiced and developed.

The faith committee seeks to encourage and help faith-based organizations successfully model and encourage good character with the individuals and families under their influence, resulting in a supportive role of character development within the faith-based community.

The education committee seeks to enhance the effectiveness of education by helping students to understand the role of character to their success, and providing resources and tools for school administrators and teachers to use in converting their school environment into a culture of good character.

The business committee provides tools and solutions to develop good character in the lives of employees to help them reach their full potential, and seeks to help business leaders and owners understand how the development of good character in the lives of their employees will increase business success with honor.

The government committee seeks to provide character training and materials to help government personnel model good character within the community, and implement good character within each government entity by emphasizing, requiring, and recognizing good character.  In addition, the government committee seeks to assist with the success of local law enforcement personnel by helping them implement community relationships with Law Enforcement that will result in lower crime and citizen complaints while increasing positive feedback.

The law enforcement committee seeks to assist with the success of local law enforcement personnel by helping them implement community relationships and character training that will result in lower crime and citizen complaints while increasing positive feedback.

Finally, a communications committee seeks to build relationships with local media channels to increase the community's awareness of the importance of good character, and to aid the other six committees in accomplishing their implementation strategies.

To establish identity and to facilitate the accomplishment of the mission, The Tuscaloosa Character Council recruits a board of directors and establishes itself as a non-religious, non-political, non-profit organization.
