"Our kids love the Character First! Program, and we do too! Every month our classes get together and watch one of the DVD character sections. The DVD segments are well made, and they hold our students' attention for the whole hour! The lesson plans are easy to follow and the kids look forward to getting the character cards. A super program!"

-Carol Jacobs, 3rd grade teacher, Myrtlewood Elementary

The Character First! program is a valuable tool for my third grade class. Students need direct, specific ways to apply character traits into their daily lives. This program outlines specific ways to be truthful, obedient, and orderly. I believe if these character traits are instilled in students at this age, that it will help produce caring and honest adults in the work place and home. The Character First! program also directs students through each trait with an I will section giving exact ways to apply these traits to life. This program outlines the character lessons in a simple and meaningful way that will help students remember good character traits for years to come. Thank you for supplying us with the Character First! program. Please know that your contribution is making a difference in our lives.

- Bethany McCay, 3rd Grade Teacher, Northington Elementary

The mission of the organization is to implement the Character First! character development program in every third grade classroom in the community, and thus far, this project has been very successful.  All of the materials and training for these programs are fully funded by gifts to the Tuscaloosa Character Council.  Alberta Elementary and Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary have begun teaching the Character First! material this year.

Successful achievement of this goal will result in reaching more than 2,300 third graders each school year which, with the ripple effect, will extend to their families and teachers.  With character lessons about:

  • Gratefulness
  • Generosity
  • Obedience
  • Attentiveness
  • Virtue
  • Truthfulness
  • Sincerity
  • Forgiveness
  • Orderliness

The added effects will result in a foundation primed for success in the family, the school, the workplace, and in life in general.

An additional goal in the education area is to implement an age-appropriate version of the Character First! training program to all middle school classrooms in Tuscaloosa over the next seven years.
